Author Kate Genovese met with me at Barnes and Noble in Burlington. She set the price for the P.R. work, $2,000.00.
My fee is $3900.00 for 13 weeks, my standard rate since the mid-1980s. I've handled many notable names, nightclubs and exhibitions in the entertainment world, not just music.
I like to get paid upfront, but Kate wanted a payment plan. She gave me $100.00 than an additional $400.00. Then she claimed she lost her job and didn't want to pay me anymore, even though I was in overdrive.
On a snowy night she handed me another $500.00, though she had put me in a panic. She hires me, I'm working hard for her, as I have twice before, and then she pulls the plug?
Then she reasoned why she couldn't pay the debt that she incurred:
---my dog needs surgery
---my car needs repair
---the nurse took the job back and I'm out of work
Excuse after excuse after excuse, but of course I would get the phone call "Do you have the webmaster's e mail address?" and then "Do you have the webmaster's phone #."
I got her a new webmaster because she had some kind of issues with her previous guy. It seems that Kate Genovese always throws the blame on the person she was doing business with - be it a publisher or a webmaster or a publicist, at least in my conversations with her. But I never thought she would turn on me.
She starts being abusive about her Facebook page making up a story about me and upsetting me. Is this how she decides she will renege on the agreement? By harassing me?
I have known Kate Genovese for many years, and have many, many e mails. This blog will be published in book form - I have a template for the books that I am writing, with Chapter 1 coming out in pamphlet form.
It's important for people who are hired by these types of individuals to have a forum - and a good warning for anyone to see the red flags before you become a bank and start giving out payment plans.
Kate was a friend. I never thought she would rip me off and take advantage of me. But she did.
Keep watching this blog for updates. I want the world to know how a senior citizen was abused by a nurse or former nurse.

This 65 year old elder person was kicked in the teeth and taken advantage of by Kate Genovese.
This is my story.
CHAPTER ONE
DR. GENOVESE AND KATE HYDE
A stated in the Foreword, author Kate Genovese met with me at Barnes and Noble in Burlington. She set the price for the P.R. work, $2,000.00, and then she stiffed me.
Kate can be a charming, eloquent and she's truly one of the better speakers on the circuit. Kate can talk to a library audience and they can relate to her. She is very gifted. In fact, from my observations, Kate isn't even aware of her gifts of communication and public speaking.
She hired me to edit April Showers, a book about a sex addict she named Max Knight. The book was in two pieces, Genovese having written half of it, put it down, then at another point in time picking up the idea again and writing another half of the book.
The usually focused and on-point Genovese was all over the map. Like the Beatles Get Back album, which eventually came out as Let It Be, the work needed a different pair of eyes on it. Kate's writings have come out on small imprints; my etchings have been released by larger publishers with major distribution and prestige attached. It felt like a very good pairing, and Kate told me that she and her husband, Gary, liked the direction I was taking the book into.
First I had to ask Kate to work with me in changing the title. April Showers is too common - and in this age of Google, it would definitely get lost in the algorithm shuffle. But since the book deals with Max's sex addiction and April's death, it seemed obvious for me to title the book After April. After April, of course, has found use elsewhere in the world of literature, but our use of it made sense and was a perfect fit. It had a more distinct feel and could easily find a place on its own.
_____________________________
While editing the book tragedy struck my family. Each person deals with death in their own way. For all involved I kept it very quiet, Kate chose to put her feelings into book form with Hat Tricks From Heaven, the book that came after our work on After April.
At first Kate was very caring telling me to take my time and grieve. Two weeks later she was down my throat to get the book done. So much for being the sensitive nurse.
Let's just reverse it for a moment. Could you imagine two weeks after Kate's son's passing asking her to edit your work, in a demanding and insensitive tone? Well, that's exactly what she did to me. Meanwhile I was catatonic. Pain was going through my body from head to toe...slowly, and this is captured in private poetry only few have read. In keeping with the privacy issue I will let my feelings out, but not mention any names. A friend called two days later and help make the arrangements - I was too stunned and in shock to do anything. Kate phoned and asked if I wanted to see a doctor and get medication. It was a nice gesture by her, but I weighed it out and decided to go through the stress and the heartache without drugs.
It was a wise, but very painful, way to move forward.
It is now 5 years, 7 months and 14 days since the tragedy. It is still raw. People do not understand monumental loss until it happens to them. I decided to dive into After April at exactly the point where April died. What is blended into that manuscript is my own personal pain, the loss of someone so very special. The pearl from the pain.

So many people were insensitive I found it stunning. And I thought of two quotes that are out there, one from Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, and I'll paraphrase him - "Death either brings people together or tears them apart." It is really true, and hopefully whomever is reading this will take Mr. Gibb's assessment to heart. It does.
The other is the late Jerry Garcia's line that "Death only matters for the person who is dying; everyone else has to learn to live without that person." Again, I'm paraphrasing someone who called his band "The Grateful Dead."
Here I am - the Optimist - writing about death and experiencing death. Like the onion layers of our lives, peeling and revealing, different dimensions, different states, different feelings, different realities.
Kate Genovese was getting unrelenting about the book. It was like she gave me two weeks to grieve and then began pressuring me. That the book hasn't come out in five and a half years speaks volumes about her impatience and lack of sincerity when it came to my bereavement period. And keep in mind, Kate puts her work as a nurse front and center in her self-promotion.
With nurse's that moody, quickly irritated and grumpy she's like that old joke about the doctor treats midgets: he has little patients (patience.) Working for Kate Genovese while going through the most traumatic moment of your life, well, just imagine if the situation were reversed? I was kind and genuine in dealing with her testy attitude while I was grieving. I worked harder on the book to please her, but throwing myself into writing about death while grieving, though it may have benefited the art - and Ms. Genovese - it was taking its toll on me.

The late, great Ray McNally was a friend of mine. His final book was In Search of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Ray appeared on my TV show. I didn't know that he was ill, and we had a good time reconnecting, having known each other since the early 1970s. Ray's brilliance - In Search of Dracula, of course, putting him on the literary map, was obvious to me in the interview. He said that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were one and the same. It was no "split personality," and I'm paraphrasing Ray here, though I can always go back to the videotape of the show, that Hyde was Jekyll hiding who he truly was. And that is paraphrasing Mr. McNally as well, all from memory.
I'm not going to go into Kate's personal life. You can read her other books to get a glimpse into her personality. She put into her writings her issues, but in my dealings with her I have witnessed her transformation from the caring nurse who wanted to help me get medication while grieving, to the self-absorbed, "me, me, me, me, me..." personality that can't control her ego, can't restrain herself from acting in an unprofessional way that hurts all the hard work she has put into her writing.
Ripping off a senior citizen is that "Mr. Hyde" harmful arrogance, that putting herself first over others. Taking my hard work and honest effort, sending communications that belittle my kindness, and taking advantage of me, as she did on August 24, 2019, doing a book signing when her bill was left unpaid.
